Meet Heidi

Heidi Cochran was born in Ohio and raised by a single mother. Watching her mother work long hours just to make ends meet taught Heidi early how the system was failing hard working Americans. She moved to Chicago to attend DePaul University on an academic scholarship, and she worked multiple jobs so she could pay for her education. It was during college that Heidi first began her work as an activist, serving as the events chair for Spectrum, DuPaul’s LGBT+ Social Organization. After graduating, she continued her activism as a lobbyist with the Human Rights Campaign, becoming chair of both the Chicago and New York City steering committees. She has continued her community work since moving to New York City, and is now ready to bring her passion and experience to Washington DC.

Our Priorities

As your senator, I'm going to end the Trump administration's destructive policies and make life more affordable for all Americans.

  • Cost of Living

    Nobody works harder than New Yorkers, but wealthy corporations continue to fleece working people for every dollar while our current representatives do nothing. As your senator, I will:

    • Raise the federal minimum wage so that no one has to work 2-3 jobs just to keep the lights on.
    • Lower grocery prices by improving the supply chain and empowering local farmers to continue growing crops sustainably.
    • Lower the tax burden on our working class by requiring billionaires and wealthy corporations to pay their fair share.
  • Affordable Housing

    New York City is known for its sky-high rent prices, but all across our state, more and more people are forced to spend nearly all of their monthly pay just to keep a roof over their head. I will:

    • Prevent price gouging from landlords and large property management companies by implementing rent freezes with strict increase limits.
    • Establish a path to home ownership with down payment assistance and ownership incentives to make owning a home a reality for all who want it.
    • Ban corporations buying residential property to prevent monopolization and price gouging when buying a home.
  • Healthcare for All

    Let me say it plainly: healthcare is a human right. No one should have to choose between seeing the doctor and feeding their family. As your senator, I will ensure everyone can see the doctor without breaking the bank. I will:

    • Pass Medicaid for All to make healthcare accessible and affordable for everyone, and guarantee that people can see any available provider with Medicaid.
    • Introduce price ceilings for life-saving medications so that you can access the medications you need at little to no cost. Pharmaceutical companies should never be allowed to price you out of necessary medications.
    • Support and reform our emergency care process to expedite appointments for those needing timely care.
  • AI & Data Center Regulation

    I will not allow ultra-wealthy AI corporations to exploit New York’s natural resources and force us to foot the bill. Here’s what I’ll do to regulate the AI industry in New York:

    • Pass a nationwide moratorium on data center construction until we properly understand the long-term impacts, and require that developers pass a majority vote from community members before building a data center in their backyards.
    • Collaborate with environmental science experts to pass regulation limiting natural resource consumption by data centers, and support efforts to research the longer-term impacts of these technologies on our environment.
    • Implement mandatory LLM ethics and guardrails to ensure that companies are considering the ethical implications of their technology, including serious penalties for companies whose technology is being used to generate nonconsensual images of individuals.
  • Bodily Autonomy

    Everyone in this country has the right to make their own decisions about their own bodies. Here is how I will protect that right: 

    • Protect the right to choose by passing a federal law protecting abortion access.
    • Fund Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide lifesaving reproductive healthcare.
    • Prevent the government from threatening hospitals that provide gender affirming care through the withholding of funds, and require insurance companies to cover gender affirming care. 
  • Immigration

    Whether someone is a citizen or not, everyone in this country deserves to be treated humanely. Immigrants contributing positively to our society deserve the chance to become citizens. As your senator, I will:

    • Create a timely, straightforward path to citizenship for immigrants who are paying proper taxes and contributing to our society.
    • Pass federal laws protecting birthright citizenship and protecting the rights of immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.
    • Abolish ICE and instate civil, community-based alternatives for enforcing immigration policy. No more detention centers and mass deportations.
